Rationale/Te Take Why? He aha ai?
Why focus on Structured Literacy and a tiered approach?
To improve the levels of achievement in our schools by providing robust programmes that are based on explicit methods of teaching literacy.
A structured literacy approach is sequential, systematic, cumulative and diagnostic. This will ensure that the learning of the skills needed to read and write are taught explicitly within our schools.
Structured Literacy stems from the Science of Reading which is a vast body of scientifically-based research about reading and barriers related to learning to read and write. Structured Literacy is evidence-based for effective teaching and will improve student outcomes.
The opportunity to adapt and build the capability of teachers’ practice will enhance the educational outcomes for all of our students across the Kāhui Ako in literacy.
Measures/Ngā Mēhua
- Collaborate, collect and document teacher voice within Kāhui Ako ki Orewa.
- Collated data from the Kāhui schools on literacy achievement.
- A collaborative network of representatives from each kura set up and functioning to support Structured Literacy and a tiered approach within our schools.
