We are all so close to the end of the year. As exhaustion sets in, all of us need a reminder like this sometimes – no matter our years of experience in the classroom. Hayley Campell from Dairy Flat School shares this for now and heading into next year. It is a fantastic article to read for that tricky class, if we get to feeling a bit defeated, and to remind ourselves how important our happiness is!

Science of Reading / Structured Literacy

Presentation at Orewa College to Year 7 & 8 Kaiako

Madeleine presented to the Year 7 and 8 kaiako at Orewa College’s recent Teacher Only Day. Her presentation on the Science of Reading, particularly the implementation of Structured Literacy programs in our Kāhui Ako primary schools, provided valuable insights. This information has sparked interest and discussion among our kaiako, guiding the potential direction of Structured Literacy practices at Orewa College.

Praxis and the Mana Circle

Praxis is a network of Educators and Youth Development Practitioners. They are passionate about educating and mentoring the next generation of leadership in Aotearoa, who will make a positive difference in the lives of young people.

‘Praxis’ – the word, means learning from what we do. It’s an educational movement made popular by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. It’s learning in action! Praxis’ big idea is to help make our country a better place for young people to grow up in.

Praxis spoke at our recent HBC Youth Hauora Network hui.  The focus was on pain-based behaviour and the Mana Model.

Pain-based behaviour is expressed by young people in schools, at home and in the community.  What is being expressed in their behaviour is most likely not what is happening in the young person’s life. Such behaviours are a call for help from the young person but the behaviour is not necessarily what we expect.  The behaviour is a form of communication providing clues about what is missing in a young person’s life.

The Iceberg is a great analogy for the behaviours seen and what is happening below the surface.

Their teaching approach is based on the Circle of Mana, a model of youth development which suggests that the foundations for learning rest on:

  • knowing who we are and where we belong,
  • becoming competent,
  • taking responsibility for ourselves
  • acting generously towards others.

The Circle of Mana is a model which as a Kahui Ako, we could use as common ground for Hauora, Wellbeing in each of our kura and as a collective.

Bilingual/Reorua Māori Class to Start in 2025

Some of you may not be aware but our rōpū has been supporting the creation of the first kura tuatahi/primary school bi-lingual class in our hāpori. This is a massive milestone for our whole area as whānau Māori have been dreaming of this for a long time.

William Albertsma (Pictured) will be the kaiako leading the kaupapa at Silverdale School starting Term 1, 2025. The aim is to be a level 3 Te Reo Māori Reorua meaning that 30-50% of the instruction throughout the week will be in te reo Māori.

There will be a mix of year 5 and year 6 students, boys and girls, Māori and Pākehā/Tauiwi. Our whānau and hāpori will all play a role in deciding what it will look like, feel like and sound like. The hope is to draw on expertise around the community to come in and support programs and help teach our tamariki.

Currently, in Tāmaki, there are only 12 bi-lingual classes at level 3 or above. The dream/moemoeā is that this will be the first of many in our Kāhui Ako. This is a monumental moment for us all.
